In this post, I will talk about John P. Schmal's website "Indigenous Mexico", a website that is the culmination of decades of research.
John P. Schmal is a historian, genealogist, and lecturer. He was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. After graduating from high school, John attended Loyola-Marymount University in Los Angeles and St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, where he studied Geography, History and Earth Sciences and received two BA degrees.
A few days ago I had the pleasure to talking to John and record a presentation by him tilted "Indigenous Mexico: The Ancestors of the Tejanos". This presentation focuses on the indigenous peoples of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi and South Texas. For those of you interested this presentation will be posted on www.lasvillasdelnorte.com on September 13, 2020.
The reason for inviting John to do a presentation and that I am writing this blog post is that many of us have Indigenous roots. In my own case I know this because I have about 30% Native American in my DNA. I have also come across records listing my ancestors as Indians and mestizos.
Back to John's website, in it you will find articles about the indigenous people of Mexico for each Mexican state. To access them just go to https://indigenousmexico.org/ and on the home page just click "Articles by State" on the top menu bar.

Thank you for sharing this great website. That was a very good article for anyone with Native American ancestry in South Texas and Northern Mexico. I have 41% Native American in my DNA which is then broken down to Northeastern Mexico and South Texas then broken down again to Nuevo Leon, Northern Tamaulipas & South Texas. My great grandparents and their family are listed as indigeno or indio mezclado con blanco in their records. I have been lucky enough to find my g g grandparents and my g g g grandparents as well. And Moises, my great grandmother was a Garza but I don't know if you and I are related yet. Again, thanks for the great article.
