In this post, I share with you a great presentation titled "No Surnames? No Problem! Researching Indigenous Ancestors in Mexico" by Nefi Arenas. It contains great information, about misconceptions, recommendations, and tips to help you find your indigenous ancestors.
From time to time I feature a presentation that is available on Las Villas del Norte (the official premium genealogy group for our Mexican genealogy community). These presentations have a focus on researching Mexico or are about methodology that can be applied to researching our Mexican and Spanish Colonial Ancestry.
This month's presentation that I want to make you aware of is that of professional genealogist Nefi Arenas and it is titled "No Surnames? No Problem! Researching Indigenous Ancestors in Mexico".
The summary of the presentation is: "A prevailing myth when researching ancestors in Mexico who belonged to an indigenous group is that there is no documentation available, or that it can't be done. Indigenous books are usually well preserved; there are a few challenges (like no surnames) but those ancestors can be found."
This presentation provides a great wealth of knowledge on how to find an research your indigenous ancestry.
The following topics are discussed:
- 1930 US Census
- Tips for Indigenous Research
- Real Case Study
