Nueva Vizcaya was the first northern province of New Spain to be explored and settled by the Spanish. In about 1528, a group of Spaniard explorers, led by Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca, first arrived at the actual territory of what is now Chihuahua. The conquest of this new territory lasted nearly one hundred years and encountered heavy resistance from the Conchos tribe, but the desire of the Spanish to transform the region into a mining center led to a strong strategy to control this area.
You can expect to find records going all the way back up until 1632 maybe earlier if you get lucky.

My name is Gregory Pisano. I have a sacramental record for my paternal great-grandparents who were married in Chihuahua city in 1850. The record contains the name of the native village of my great-grandmother but I cannot determine a satisfactory reading of it. I can read the remainder of the record but not this name. Would anyone who is from or familiar with the Chihuahua city area like have a look at it? I can be reached at [email protected]. Thank you.
Looks like Ignacio Pisaño legitimate son of Eugenio Pisaño and Maria Josefa Valdiviero
Moises, thanks for your post. It appears that I was not clear where my sticking point is. I can read the entire partida except I cannot come up with a satisfactory reading for the place-name found on the extreme right, fourth line from the bottom.
I recently found out I am 30% Native American. My family I know is from Chihuahua Mexico. My question is is that enough to be able to register as a Native American? And how would I ?
I have not heard of any tribe registering members based on DNA results.
Hi, I’m looking to get information on my great, great grandfather. His name was Silvino Orozco born on Feb 16, 1886. He married Rita Reyes on July 27, 1912, in El Paso, TX. All I have on him is a marriage certificate with Rita and a border crossing card from that same day that states he was a Mexican Official. They had a daughter named Eva Orozco in 1913. I believe he died shortly after. Any information would be great!
Try searching for his Mexican Civil Registration birth record on Ancestry.
No luck. It’s like he is a ghost.
