Historic Mexican and Mexican American Press
Last Names of Nuevo Leon

Historic Mexican and Mexican American Press is an excellent resource to find ancestors from the areas of Tucson, El Paso, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sonora, Mexico. It covers from the mid-1800s to the 1970s and you definitely need to check this collection out. Or at least make yourself familiar with it since you never know when your research may lead you to those areas.

Historic Mexican and Mexican American Press

This collection is called “The Historic Mexican and Mexican American Press”, it documents and showcases historic Mexican and Mexican American publications for the above areas.

“The collection covers important periods in Mexican-American history, from the Mexican Revolution to the Bracero Program to the Chicano Movement. There are about 1,900,000 Latino and Hispanic population in Arizona and more than 50 million in the United States. Having this collection available to the public through digitization of these materials will raise awareness of issues that advance the image and identity of Latinos in American politics and media and their contributions to the United States.”

What is great about this collection is that you can access it online at their website. As I have mentioned in the past newspapers and publications are essential to finding stories about our ancestors. Even if this collection does not help you out, at least you know that it is out there and you can eventually help someone out that is doing research by at least pointing it out to them.

Well, that said. Here is a list of the newspapers and or publications that are available in this collection. The first column is the newspaper, the second one tells you the dates that it was published in and the final column will tell you which years are available digitally through the University of Arizona.

I test drove the collection by searching for Garza and got 218 results, which is good. This means that the collection can be fully searched using keywords and it is not just a browsable collection.
